Matt Targett came through the youth system at Southampton, and the full-back has made 42 first-team appearances for the Saints in all competitions.

The defender actually appeared on 20 occasions during the 2015-16 season, but struggled for football during the 2016-17 campaign, and also in the first half of last term.

The 22-year-old moved to Fulham on loan during the January transfer window, and the former England Under-21 international played a key role in the Cottagers securing Premier League promotion via the playoffs.

It has been claimed that Southampton boss Mark Hughes is not prepared to sell Targett, who is valued at £2.7m by transfermarkt.co.uk, this summer despite Fulham wanting to sign him once again.

The club's supporters have been reacting to the news, and there are those who are pleased to learn that the defender could be staying at St Mary's.

That said, there are also some Southampton fans who feel that Targett staying means that Ryan Bertrand, who has been strongly linked with a move away, will depart ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.
