Southampton fans heap praise on Stuart Armstrong after 2-0 win over Chelsea

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Stuart Armstrong, following the impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day.

The Scotland international was making his fifth Premier League start of the campaign against the Blues at Stamford Bridge, and went on to deliver an excellent performance which was vital in helping his side pick up a huge three points.

Armstrong had one shot, made one key pass, completed two dribbles and drew two fouls from Frank Lampard’s side, highlighting his substantial contribution on the attacking side of things – his sublime one-two with Danny Ings and lofted through ball into Nathan Redmond for the second goal was an exquisite piece of play.

On the defensive side of things, the 27-year-old was again heavily involved. Armstrong made four successful tackles, as well as two clearances on a day where his class shone through.

The Saints now sit quite comfortably in 14th place, with 21 points to their name – the response to that embarrassing 9-0 defeat to Leicester has been quite eye-catching.

Is Stuart Armstrong the most important player behind Danny Ings?

This supporter said that the win over Chelsea was the second game running in which Armstrong has ran the show, before going on to call the former Celtic man a “modern day Steven Davis” – high praise indeed given how influential the Northern Irishman used to be for Southampton.

Another fan made reference to the last two games, saying that “it’s no coincidence” that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have won the last two games in which Armstrong has returned to the team – they then went on to state that the midfielder “makes us tick”.

Elsewhere, this pair of supporters both mentioned that the Southampton No.17 is “vital” to the side – the second fan added that Armstrong is “so good at creating attacks”.

Meanwhile, The Saint Centre dropped some more lofty praise on the Scotsman by comparing him to Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi, which means that he must be doing something right under Hasenhuttl.
