Southampton fans thank Chelsea for doing them a favour in relegation battle

Southampton have not had many good days this season, but they experienced some rare joy on Saturday.

The pressure was on Mark Hughes and his team as they headed into this afternoon’s fixture against Bournemouth at St Mary’s four points adrift of safety with as many games left to play.

The encounter between the two clubs has become somewhat of a South-Coast derby, so there was added incentive for victory today.

Dusan Tadic put the Saints ahead in the first half, but the Cherries bounced back with a goal of their own through Joshua King.

After the half-time break, the hosts regained their lead thanks to another hit by Tadic, and this time, Bournemouth were unable to respond.

In the last few weeks, the majority of Southampton fans were resigned to relegation, but there is renewed hope following their victory, but they also have Chelsea to thank.

Antonio Conte’s men secured a 1-0 triumph over Southampton’s fellow relegation battlers Swansea City, which means that the coastal club are now just one point from safety with three games left in their calendar.
