According to the London Evening Standard, Southampton want to sign Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck before this summer's transfer window closes for business.

It is understood that Welbeck, who was a part of the England squad at the 2018 World Cup, will be allowed to leave Arsenal before Thursday's transfer deadline.

Southampton are one of three clubs to be credited with an interest, with Everton and Bournemouth also said to be in the hunt.

There is no question that Welbeck has his limitations, but the 27-year-old scored 10 times in all competitions for Arsenal last term, and could form a strong partnership with Charlie Austin at St Mary's.

Indeed, with regular football and the full confidence of his manager, there is no reason why the attacker could not thrive next term.

The Southampton fans have been offering their views on the Welbeck speculation, and it would be fair to say that the majority are desperate for their club to seal the Englishman's signature.
