Southampton fans want Angus Gunn starting ahead of Alex McCarthy after Everton heroics

Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn was one of his side’s heroes as they beat Everton on penalties at Goodison Park to reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, and Saints fans were quick to react on Twitter to say that he should be starting ahead of first-choice Alex McCarthy.

The south coast outfit signed the 22-year-old from Manchester City in a deal worth £13.5m during the summer transfer window, but McCarthy has – deservedly so following his performances between the sticks throughout 2018 – been preferred in the Premier League, with Gunn having to settle for his chance in the cup.

Dropping the former Palace stopper, who has even earned an England call-up in recent weeks thanks to his outstanding form, would be extremely controversial and harsh, but that has not dissuaded some of the St Mary’s faithful from speaking up.

Southampton supporters, who have also reacted to one of their former stars sold on the cheap excelling, took to social media to have their say on the goalkeeper situation, and while one said “Gunn is our best keeper, start him”, another said “Gunn looks better than McCarthy for me”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
