Southampton’s hopes of staying in the English Premier League took another critical blow on Saturday after losing 3-2 at home to Chelsea.
Leading the Blues by a two goal margin heading into the last 20 minutes of the game, Saints were eventually left bitterly disappointed after an eight-minute three goal blitz that handed all three points to the visitors.
The defeat leaves them five points adrift of safety and perilously close to dropping down to the English Championship.
Perhaps most frustratingly for supporters, it was the refereeing decisions of Mike Dean that left them most annoyed after the match, believing he should have sent off Marcos Alonso for a stamp on Shane Long in the first half.
The Spaniard eventually went on to assist the first goal of Chelsea’s comeback.
Would his sending off have confirmed the three points for Mark Hughes men and seen them take a big step towards beating the drop?
Supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts…
Mike Dean is an absolute disgrace, having seen the Alonso stamp, its decisions like that which ruin the game. #SaintsFC

Dear oil rich nations with a developing football Infrastructure. Fancy giving Mike Dean a job? #Saintsfc

I know I’ve been mean about Long but I don’t think he deserved the fatwa put on him by Mike Dean and Chelsea today. Stamped on, elbowed in the back of the head (illegal in UFC), scissored. Part of refereeing is keeping players safe. Dean didn’t even do that today. #SaintsFC

Mike Dean is a f*cking shocking ref btw. Has to be centre of attention all the time! Should’ve sent off Alonso! Then he wouldn’t have assisted the first goal, they wouldn’t beat us! Absolute bottle job of a ref and should be sacked or suspended! #SaintsFC

#BBCFootball Take a bow Mike Dean. The art of biased refereeing. Alonso not even booked for a straight red offence. Let Chelsea decide where they wanted to take their free kicks from (Alonso naturally sets up equaliser from one). Bravo sir!👏 #Saintsfc #SOUCHE

Missed a sending off, missed a pass back, gave 'advantage' for nothing, let said 'advantage' go for 5 seconds, pulled it back as no 'advantage' from something that wasn't even an 'advantage'. Terrific from Dean. We don't need VAR, we need competent officials #saintsfc
