According to The Telegraph, Southampton are set to re-open negotiations for Birmingham City forward Che Adams.

What's the word, then?

The Saints are hopeful £14m should see the Englishman make the move from the Midlands to the south coast.

Southampton thought they could secure Adams in January when they bid £10m for the striker, but Birmingham's transfer embargo and points deduction meant they could not afford to lose the player given they were fighting relegation from the Championship.

The 22-year-old had an incredible season for the club despite the fact they finished a lowly 17th as he scored 22 goals and provided four assists in a stellar campaign which saw just five players in the division net more than him.

Burnley and Everton are also both said to be looking at Adams, although neither have made any sort of formal approach as yet so Ralph Hasenhuttl's side look best placed to sign him.

Southampton's new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below...

Hasenhuttl has a clear plan

The St Mary's based club have already conducted business this summer, with Moussa Djenepo becoming the former RB Leipzig manager's first signing since joining in December.

Both Djenepo and the 5 ft 9 Birmingham attacker are examples of the south coast side's new transfer policy which the boss spoke about to German newspaper Bild.

Hasenhuttl said the club are looking to put in place a transfer policy which means they do not sign anybody over the age of 24, and that should be music to the ears of many Saints fans who pride themselves on the club consistently having a young, hungry squad.

He also revealed that as many as five new additions to the squad are in the pipeline and despite the fact that Southampton finished 16th in the Premier League last season, it does feel like something exciting is being built at St Mary's.

The club seem to have a clear direction of where they want to go and how they want to go about it through acquiring players who will only improve - Djenepo and Adams are prime examples.

They are not working with a scary budget, nor are they purchasing marquee names, but they look to be a side to watch out for come August.
