Southampton interested in Hull centre-back as defensive crisis deepens

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Southampton are eyeing up a move for £10 million-rated Hull City defender James Chester.

Saints boss Koeman is believed to be looking to bring in two new centre-backs after Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur instead of turning his loan move at the south coast club permanent.

And with Romanian international Florin Gardos now sidelined for seven months with a serious knee injury, Koeman is in desperate need to recruit new defenders to strengthen his backline.

26-year-old Gardos won’t play again until February after picking up his injury in Thursday’s 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Dutch side Feyenoord.

This leaves Koeman with just Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida as his only fit and experienced central defenders ahead of the upcoming campaign, which means that signing a new player in this position has become the club’s top priority in the transfer market.

One such player is Wales international Chester, who may leave the Tigers after their relegation from the Premier League last season. The 26-year-old is believed to be valued at £10 million.
