Over the years, Southampton and Liverpool have formed an interesting link, with both clubs benefitting in different ways.
The Merseyside outfit have signed a handful of players from the coastal club in recent seasons.
Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne, Rickie Lambert, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk are among the names that the Reds have swiped from St Mary’s.
Southampton have earned a substantial amount of money from those sales, particularly the most recent (Van Dijk) who cost around £75m.
On Thursday, the Saints announced the arrival of new signing Guido Carrillo, who BBC Sport claims cost around £19m from Monaco.
The club-record deal came as a big relief for the fans due to the current frustrations on the pitch.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s team sit in the relegation zone, one point from safety having not won a Premier League game since November.
The excitement of Carrillo’s switch to Southampton was somewhat overshadowed by rival fans who joked that Liverpool had just nabbed a new player.
Congratulations Liverpool.
