According to reports in The Mirror, Southampton are one of the Premier League clubs keeping tabs on exciting Sunderland hot-shot Josh Maja.

What's the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that Saints, along with top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, have been impressed by the 19-year-old's amazing start to the season for the League One outfit.

The teenager may not have even expected to be a regular starter before the campaign got underway, but his form combined with injury issues for his fellow strikers have meant that he has become a key player in the XI, and he has scored nine times in 12 league matches.

The report adds that City are keen on him again having not renewed his scholarship back in 2015 prior to him joining Sunderland, and a potential suitor could potentially get him for a bargain fee seeing as his contract at the Stadium of Light is due to expire in June as things stand.

Would he be a good signing?

He certainly would be.

The 19-year-old looks to have a really bright future ahead of him given the impact and goalscoring ability he has shown at such a young age, and he would be a strong addition for Southampton whichever division they find themselves in next term – the Championship is a very realistic option based on their beginning to the season.

Meanwhile, the addition of promising striker would allow Hughes to finally offload some of the deadwood and perform a much-needed freshening up of his attacking options – Charlie Austin, Shane Long and Sam Gallagher are just three that either don't appear to be in his plans or simply aren't good enough to play for them at the top level any longer.
