Nottingham Forest winger Joe Lolley played his part in a remarkable Wednesday evening at Villa Park with four assists and one goal in a 5-5 draw, and Southampton should look to sign the 26-year-old during the January transfer window.

What's the word, then?

Well, the wide man had been in fine form for Aitor Karanka's men so far this term with six goals and three assists to his name in 22 appearances in all competitions, but he took it to another level against Aston Villa in midweek.

Not only did he score a thumping effort from 25 yards out, but he also laid on all of the Reds' other four goals on a crazy night in the west Midlands.

Lolley only joined Forest on a four-and-a-half year deal in January of this year, but he could already be attracting Premier League interest again having left Huddersfield Town to drop down into the Championship.

Why should Southampton sign him?

The south coast outfit have only won one top flight fixture this season and currently lie within the relegation zone, and one of their main issues – as it has been for the previous two-and-a-half years – is their struggle in front of goal.

They aren't scoring or creating the clear-cut chances they need to, and following Lolley's latest haul it seems clear that he could help them to do that in the second-half of the 2018/19 campaign.

Even though he perhaps wasn't at his best in his final season at St Mary's, Saints – and their fans on Twitter after his Champions League brace on Tuesday – certainly look to be missing the creativity and quality that Dusan Tadic possessed following his move to Ajax during the summer, and the fact that he has scored more goals than their entire team this term proves that the club need to find the new version of him, and quickly.
