Once again, it wasn't necessarily a bad performance from Southampton.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side had 19 shots, took the lead through Danny Ings and also had more possession than Newcastle with 54.5% of the ball, although they still ended up on the losing side as a result of some poor finishing.

One of the biggest culprits for missing such glaring chances was Nathan Redmond.

The former Birmingham and Norwich forward missed a one-on-one with Martin Dubravka in the first-half after a careless pass from Jetro Willems, when Redmond could only fire straight at the Magpies glovesman.

Despite his significant miss, the 25-year-old attacker continued to work hard and actually recorded five tackles throughout his 90 minutes on the field - more than anyone else on the pitch managed.

Southampton's No.22 also had three shots - two of which were on target - while he also completed three dribbles at St James' Park.

Interestingly, Redmond's struggle to score, despite working hard, was emblematic of Southampton's struggles throughout the bulk of the current campaign.

Hasenhuttl's side have been decent in terms of creating chances, sitting 12th in the 'Big Chances Created' table with 21 efforts forged, although they have missed 19 of those 'Big Chances' while also holding the unwanted statistic of being 6.2 goals below their amount of Expected Goals - only bottom-placed Watford have been more wasteful in terms of xG.

The 2-2 draw against Arsenal a few weeks ago was a prime example of how seriously Southampton are shooting themselves in the foot at times.

The Saints had 21 shots to the Gunners' 12, but could only score twice while missing numerous sitters before throwing two vital points away in the dying embers after Alexandre Lacazette scored.

Having said that, Hasenhuttl's side are still well-known for their intense pressing style and do work hard - the backline is just extremely leaky with a league-high 35 concessions.

Redmond's performance epitomised his own side's struggles so far this term - industrial and committed, but nowhere near ruthless enough in front of goal.

In other news, these Southampton fans were not happy with one man's performance at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon...
