According to The Telegraph, unsettled Chelsea defender Gary Cahill would cost any would-be suitors £110,000-a-week to prise away from Stamford Bridge.

What’s the word?

This steep wage package may turn many clubs off the 33-year-old. However, some top flight outfits in need of the 61-cap former England international’s experience and authority could afford to shell out for the defender’s weekly demands.

There are certainly plenty of clubs who could make good use of Cahill, and the defender himself ought to be keen to leave the Blues, given that he is barely featuring for the west London club under new manager Maurizio Sarri.

Southampton are amongst the outfits who should be interested in Cahill, and the Saints would be wise to pay the price in order to bring him to St Mary’s Stadium in January.

The £110k-a-week bargain

The south coast club have been revitalised somewhat under the guidance of new manager Ralph Hassenhuttl. However, in order to emerge triumphant in the race for Premier League survival, the Saints must improve defensively.

Southampton’s backline lacks a leader, an organiser who can control the defence as a unit and put his experience to good use. Cahill fits the bill for that role and could therefore have a huge impact at St Mary’s.

Current Saints defenders, such as Jan Bednarek, Wesley Hoedt and Maya Yoshida could certainly benefit from playing alongside a figure such as Cahill too, who has been there and done it at both ends of the Premier League table in his career.

For Hasenhuttl, bringing in Cahill in January - for the cost of £110,000 per week - could hugely boost his side’s survival hopes, making that outlay something of a bargain.
