Southampton are in incredible form right now, and all of a sudden this is looking like it could be a season to remember for the south coast club.

The Saints started this term terribly with just two wins in their first 12 league games, but since then they’ve been in great touch, losing just four of their next 12.

It may be a bit of a knee-jerk reaction, but Jeff Stelling has made an audacious claim that would have sounded absolutely ridiculous two months ago.

What’s been said then?

Remarkably, the Sky Sports pundit tipped Southampton for a top-six challenge ahead of their match against Wolves.

“Listen to this ok, they are four points off the top six.” Stelling said on Gillette Soccer Saturday (18/1/20 2:42PM).

“In their next ten games, they play one of the top six and nine sides who are not in the top six.

“Could they be eying up the top six? This is a relegation-threatened side who lost 9-0 at home, but they could have one eye on the top six.”

Not so unbelievable

This sort of comment probably would have seen Stelling sacked a couple of months ago after Southampton's record-equalling 9-0 loss at home to Leicester City, but their current run actually has us questioning whether or not this could happen.

The Saints have picked up 13 points from a possible 18 in their last six games after their first loss in over a month against Wolves on Saturday, and if that sort of form continues until the end of the season then they’ll certainly be in the conversation.

Following the conclusion of Saturday's 3pm kick-offs, they're now just six points off Manchester United who sit in sixth.

It’d be a remarkable turnaround, and you’d have laughed at anyone predicting it a couple of months ago, but Saints fans can start to dream about a place in Europe if their run carries on.

In other news, Southampton fans have been reacting to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s recent transfer comments.
