Southampton ready to save £8m Championship hit-man, he wants move

Southampton are favourites to sign Charlie Austin in January with the QPR striker ready to leave the London club to join Ronald Koeman’s side, according to reports from the London Evening Standard.

The English forward scored a stunning 18 goals in Premier League action last term for the Super Hoops, but was unable to prevent them from finishing rock bottom and dropping back into the second tier.

Surprisingly he stayed at Loftus Road despite a summer of transfer speculation, but it’s understood that he could leave the club in January with his contract due to expire at the end of the season.

And reports claim that Southampton are at the front of the queue for the £8m-rated star, who is keen to move on next month.

Austin is believed to be reluctant to join a side battling against relegation, which makes the Saints an appealing option given that they’re outsiders to qualify for Europe for the 2016/17 campaign.

A move for the 26-year-old also appears to make sense for Koeman, who was forced to use Shane Long as his main centre-forward in the absence of Graziano Pelle in the loss at Manchester City on Saturday.
