Southampton set for transfer splurge after star exits

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman will be backed significantly in the transfer market on the back of the sales of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw.

The Saints’ captain and teenage left-back have now both left the club to join Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, in deals that have brought £60m to St Mary’s Stadium.

Rickie Lambert has also departed, which leaves a gaping hole in the South Coast side’s first XI after an impressive 2013/14 campaign.

Many fans are now fearing that Southampton will not be able to match their recent achievements next time around, but a statement on the club’s website in the aftermath of the Lallana sale confirmed that Koeman will have money to spend to replace sold talent:

“The fee received from Liverpool, although undisclosed, will allow the club to further develop the first-team squad for the 2014/15 season.”

One player thought to be on Koeman’s radar is Graziano Pelle.

The Dutchman managed the 6ft. 4” forward at Feyenoord last term as he struck 26 goals, and is rumoured to be ready to push an £8m move.

Dusan Tadic of Twente is also on the agenda.
