Southampton should pursue Ighalo if the price is right

Southampton should make an attempt to sign Changchun Yatai forward Odion Ighalo this month, but only if they can negotiate a good price.

What’s the word, then?

Ighalo recently told Sky Sports News that he wants to return to the Premier League this month.

The 29-year-old joined Changchun Yatai from Watford in January 2017 and has scored 36 times in 55 appearances for the Chinese Super League outfit.

Ighalo is eyeing a return to England, however, and Fanatik recently claimed that Southampton were considering a move for the centre-forward.

According to Sky Sports News, Changchun Yatai want to keep Ighalo, but will consider selling if they can recoup the £20m that they paid for him two years ago.

Southampton should certainly be exploring a potential deal for the 24-time Nigeria international, but must not pay over the odds.

Why should Southampton pursue Ighalo?

Ighalo scored 20 times in 35 Championship appearances for Watford during the 2014-15 campaign before registering 15 Premier League goals during his first season in the top flight of English football.

Ighalo only netted twice in 19 games for the Hornets in the first half of the 2016-17 season, but he was extremely unsettled during those four months or so.

The striker has shown that he can score goals at Premier League level, but it would be wrong for Southampton to splash £20m this month.

If a deal in the region of £10m could be agreed then it is certainly worth a punt for Southampton, who have recently sold Manolo Gabbiadini to Sampdoria.

Ighalo is reportedly heading to the UK to discuss his future and Southampton should be making a move for the 6ft 2in ace.
