Southampton midfielder Adam Lallana feels that Luke Shaw has the potential to be a better player than Gareth Bale.
The Saints star is in line to make his England debut against Denmark on the back of a succession of fine displays at club level over the last year.
Being a left-sided defender from Southampton’s youth academy, there have naturally been comparisons drawn between him and Gareth Bale – who also is a product of the Hampshire side’s set-up.
The Welsh wizard became the world’s most expensive player when he joined Real Madrid in an £86m deal last year, and is widely thought of as one of the top ten players on the planet.
Lallana – who witnessed Bale’s talents first hand – feels that Shaw deserves to be in the England squad and that he has the potential to be a better player than the former Tottenham idol:
“He’s an outstanding talent and one of the best – probably the best – player I’ve ever seen at 18,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.
“He’s won plaudits and gained recognition, and he’s good enough to be here today.
“When Gareth was playing with us we were in the Championship.
“For Luke, at 18, to be playing for us against some of the best wingers in the world, that’s credit to him.
“I’m really excited for him. He’s done unbelievably for us.”
Lallana is also in the Three Lions’ squad for the upcoming friendly match.
