Southampton star in race against time to face former club

According to reports in the Daily Echo, Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand is facing a race against time to be fit to face former club Chelsea at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday.

How long has he been out for?

The full-back has been absent ever since leaving the field with a hamstring injury in England’s clash against Malta at Wembley earlier this month, news which came as a blow to Saints manager Claude Puel.

The Frenchman’s side were in the middle of a run of six successive clean sheets in all competitions, and an injury to fellow left-back Matt Targett in the win over Burnley at St Mary’s meant that rookie Sam McQueen was the only natural option in that position.

Why would Bertrand’s return be a boost for the team?

While McQueen has impressed in a somewhat unfamiliar role, having only been deployed in that position since Puel’s arrival at the club, Bertrand provides experience and a real threat going forward, as he proved with a brilliant assist for Charlie Austin’s opener against West Ham at the London Stadium at the end of September.
