According to reports in The Sun, Southampton are lining up a summer move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood as they look to find a replacement for the out-of-favour Fraser Forster.

What's the word, then?

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood barks instructions

Well, The Sun says that the Premier League strugglers are looking to offload Forster at the end of the season following a disappointing campaign which saw him dropped and replaced by Alex McCarthy over the festive period.

The Sun says that Saints want to bring in competition for McCarthy – whichever division they find themselves in next term – and they are keen to bring the 33-year-old to St Mary's.

The report adds that the stopper, who has a year left on his contract with the Owls, won't play again during the current campaign after suffering a fresh groin injury.

How has Westwood done this season?

The Republic of Ireland international started the campaign between the sticks for the Championship club, making 18 appearances and conceding 22 goals – keeping four clean sheets in the process.

However, he suffered a groin injury in December that has kept him on the sidelines since, and a recurrence of the issue when he returned to training last week.

According to WhoScored.com, he made 51 saves in those 18 outings.

Would he be a good signing for Southampton?

He certainly would be.

Whichever division Saints find themselves in next season – it is looking increasingly likely that it will be the Championship given they are currently five points from safety ahead of their clash against Leicester City on Thursday night, which Sofiane Boufal should be in contention to start – Westwood would be a solid addition.

The 33-year-old has proven to be one of Wednesday's standout performers in recent seasons and would arrive at St Mary's with plenty of experience at that level.

The fans would probably prefer someone who would potentially be an upgrade on McCarthy, but the club not be in a position to realistically achieve that come what May given their current predicament.

Are the club right to move Forster on?

They probably are, yes.

The England international hasn’t been at his best since the 2015/16 season in all honesty and if he is showing no signs of improvement or getting back to that level, then the south coast outfit are right to cash in and bring in a new keeper to the club.
