Southampton are plotting a move for prolific Genk winger Leandro Trossard when the transfer window opens in January, CalcioMercato reports.

What's the word?

Mark Hughes' Southampton are under pressure following a slow start to the season and scoring goals has been a problem for the Saints, who have found the back of the just six times in nine matches - with only Huddersfield and Crystal Palace holding a worse record in front of goal.

January changes are necessary and CalcioMercato reports Southampton have their eye on Genk winger Leandro Trossard, who has caught the eye in Belgium this season by scoring 15 goals - including seven in his last five matches across all competitions.

The 23-year-old was called up by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez for the recent international break, although he is still awaiting his debut, and looks ready for a January switch to provide a further test to his ability.

The right target?

Southampton's troubles in front of goal have been well documented but the issues are more about a lack of creativity than they are a lack of quality options in attack, with Danny Ings already proving his worth this season.

Signing Trossard, who boasts a goal-threat of his own, could lead to a superb partnership between the Belgium ace and Ings, filling the void left by Dusan Tadic's move to Ajax in the summer and potentially pushing the Saints away from relegation danger.

Capable of playing on the left or in a central attacking midfield role, Trossard appears to be the ideal fix for Southampton's issues in January and Hughes must prepare a swoop.
