The Saints have been one of the surprise packages in the Premier League this season, and are just 6 points behind 7th placed Manchester United. And top players Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Luke Shaw have all been linked with moves away from St. Mary’s, after all earning their first England cap this season.
Southampton have an outstanding transfer debt of £27million, and big clubs such as Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool, who have all been linked with the 3 Saints stars, were hoping to take advantage of the club’s financial woes. But Hofstetter has calmly told fans that they will not be selling their big names: “The most important point is that we are in a position where we do not need to sell any player Mauricio (Pochettino) wants to keep,” Hofstetter said.
“We have a very strong squad and we are still in a situation where we are free enough to act quickly if quick action is asked from us. In the short time I have been at Southampton it has become abundantly clear that we are blessed with a staff that has all the necessary skills with which to progress, and now that we can supplement that with a strong board I am sure we will enjoy a successful future together.”
One fear for the Saints is having to increase their wage bill, if they need to offer new deals to keep the likes of Lallana and Shaw at the club.
