Speaking on the latest episode of the Total Saints Podcasts released on Sunday night, Lucy Highnett has blasted Southampton winger Sofiane Boufal for his performance and the part he played in the penalty incident in the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United at St Mary's on Saturday.

What did she say?

Well, the Morocco international was forced to play a more defensive role on the south coast following Moussa Djenepo's 28th-minute dismissal for Ralph Hasenhuttl's men against the Magpies, but he was guilty of giving away a spot-kick shortly before half-time.

Some may have suggested that Allan Saint-Maximin had fouled the former Lille man in the build up to what was given as handball, but Highnett was left unimpressed with the player Claude Puel brought to the club back in 2016.

The Total Saints Podcast contributor said (14:10): "I do have to say on the penalty, I know lots of people said he [Boufal] was fouled before it happened, but I just think to go with your shoulder like that is naïve, I think it's just really naïve.

"I don’t think Boufal had a good performance at all and in a game when you’re up against it like that, I just think he can be a liability."

Still yet to make his mark

Boufal may have been signed for a then club-record £16m in 2016 – potentially as a replacement for Sadio Mane following his exit to Liverpool – but he is still yet to produce consistently in a Southampton shirt.

Given the talent he clearly has – as shown by his incredible solo goal against West Bromwich Albion previously – the fact he has five goals and five assists in 83 appearances in all competitions for Saints is hardly a glowing endorsement of his ability.

His display at the weekend may have been enough to see him dropped for the trip to Norwich City this weekend in normal circumstances, but with Djenepo suspended and Nathan Redmond injured, he should be given another opportunity to make amends.

Now he needs to take it.
