New Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be looking to pick up his first win and point since being named as Mark Hughes' successor last week when his team host Arsenal at St Mary's on Sunday.

While Saints are without a Premier League win since September 1 and lie 19th in the Premier League standings, their opponents this weekend are full of confidence and unbeaten in 22 matches in all competitions.

On the chalkboard

Hasenhuttl needs points on the board quickly if he is to drag the south coast outfit out of trouble, but he faces a tough task to out-manoeuvre Unai Emery given the issues his men have at both ends of the pitch.

While scoring goals has – for the third season running – been a big issue, defensive errors – like Jannik Vestergaard's at Cardiff last weekend which led to a 1-0 defeat – are also proving to be a thorn in their side.

The 51-year-old is already working on the players' fitness and cancelled their scheduled day off on Monday, and he should look to something he did while at previous club Leipzig to help boost Saints' chances of ending the north London outfit's impressive run.

What must he do?

In his second Bundesliga match in charge of Leipzig against Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, rather than start in his preferred expansive, high-pressing style, he was instead happy to let the opponents have the ball in deep areas and instead ensured his players were compact and hard to break down.

Those workmanlike tactics quickly frustrated Dortmund and allowed Leipzig, who only had 33% possession, to play on the counter, and having been solid throughout they snatched an 89th minute through Naby Keita.

Hasenhuttl would love to repeat that feat early on during his time with the German club for Southampton this weekend, and if his team can keep things tight there is no doubt that players like Nathan Redmond and Stuart Armstrong can harm an Arsenal side who will be missing their first-choice centre-back pairing on the break.
