Sofiane Boufal had so much promise when he arrived at Southampton following a then-club-record £16m move from Lille in 2016, although aside from glimpses of outstanding quality - his wonderful solo goal against West Brom, for example - the Moroccan hasn't justified that hefty price tag so far.

Having been loaned out to struggling Celta Vigo in the summer, the winger's fortunes have hardly improved and it looks likely that the Spanish outfit will be unwilling to retain his services beyond the current campaign, with just two goals and three assists to the 25-year-old's name in 30 league appearances.

With Ralph Hasenhuttl's Southampton revolution well under way and a refreshing style of football introduced, does the misfit trickster, who completes more dribbles per 90 than Lionel Messi, have a future at St Mary's Stadium under the Austrian? Football FanCast's writers give their verdicts below...

Matt Dawson

"Given Boufal's time at Southampton so far I'd be very surprised if he stayed at the club. All I really remember him doing was scoring that wonder goal against West Brom last season but I would be intrigued to see what he could do under Ralph Hasenhuttl if given the opportunity. I still think the Saints are missing a player like the Moroccan and he could flourish under new management. I'm sure they'll be keen to avoid another Tadic situation too so that may play a part in the club's decision this summer."

James Beavis

"It's a difficult one because Hasenhuttl is clearly a manager that could get the best out of Boufal and the obvious talent that he has. Under his tutelage the Moroccan would soon be loved by Saints fans just like Nathan Redmond is, but there is one issue - his attitude. Unless he has matured at Celta Vigo it could prove to be a big problem, as Hasenhuttl won't put up with him if he is being disruptive within what has become a tight-knit squad."

Harry Sherlock

"No, quite simply. Boufal is a symbol of the largesse Southampton have been suckered into in recent transfer windows. Currently on loan at Celta Vigo, he hasn’t pulled up any trees in La Liga, and there’s little use in trying to embed him into the squad next season. There simply have to be better options in the academy."
