According to A Bola, Southampton could swoop for Benfica's Haris Seferovic this summer if he becomes available, with the 27-year-old having been in scintillating form last term for both club and country.

The Swiss striker netted 23 goals and chalked up six assists in 29 appearances for Benfica - he contributed to one goal per game on average, with a goal coming every 85 minutes.

Saints already have options up front in Danny Ings, Charlie Austin and Shane Long, but none managed to hit double figures in the Premier League last season so some added firepower certainly wouldn't go amiss if Saints intend to not spend next term once again fighting relegation.

Seferovic is a powerful forward who has featured regularly for Switzerland on the international scene with 59 senior caps to date, and can bring others into the game as well - he picked up five assists in the Portuguese league last season, while averaging one key pass per match.

The front-man is fresh off the back off his career-best goalscoring campaign and is currently in his prime, but would he be a good fit at Southampton? Football Fancast's writers give their verdicts below...

Harry Sherlock

"The 27-year-old was in excellent form throughout 2018/19 and Southampton need a proven goalscorer who can hit over 10 goals in a season. Nathan Redmond was their top scorer last season with nine goals in all competitions, while Danny Ings hit eight. Seferovic, throughout the Liga NOS campaign, scored 23 goals in 29 outings for Benfica. His performance in the Champions League was patchier – he hit just one in six, against AEK Athens – but he could have an impact in England. He is 27 and is surely approaching his peak. A move to Southampton could see him prove his worth in an elite European league."

Ben Goodwin

"I don’t think Seferovic would be a good signing for Southampton as he is too similar to the strikers they already have – extremely inconsistent. Despite grabbing 23 league goals last term, his previous league tallies are four, three, three, ten and two. A 27 year-old with limited mobility (and thus not a fit for the style of Ralph Hasenhuttl, which requires lots of pressing and quick strikers) who has just had his first impressive goalscoring season in his entire career is the last thing the Saints need. With so many low-scoring forwards on the books, Southampton really shouldn't take a risk on another one."

Charles Jones

"Despite Seferovic's incredible season at Benfica I don't think Southampton should be going for him. 23 goals in 29 appearances for Benfica suggests otherwise, but it's hard to believe he would be prolific in England. His poor performances in major international tournaments, managing just one goal in 11 appearances so far, have shown glimpses of what he would be like if he had to play in a stronger division than the Portuguese league.

"We've seen strikers earn a move off the back of a good season in Portugal before and more often than not they flop. Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, scoring just twice in 28 Norwich appearances, and Islam Slimani, who has spent much of his Leicester career out on loan, are examples of how Premier League teams can be stung when shopping in Portugal. I think Saints would be better off going for Che Adams after they have been repeatedly linked with him this summer."
