Southampton remain on course to suffer relegation to the Championship following a shocking Premier League season.

Saints came into the campaign full of hope under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino following four successive top-eight finishes, but a dreadful season in which they have only mustered five top flight victories – only one of which has come in the previous 21 attempts since November – has left them on the brink of the drop with few signs that things are set to turn around.

While Pellegrino failed miserably, his successor Mark Hughes has struggled to turn things around in recent weeks, picking up one point from 12 available to leave the south coast outfit four points from safety with just four matches remaining.

The players must also shoulder the majority of the blame, and there are a number of their so-called stars that have underperformed and perhaps not shown the right attitude to help the club and the supporters out of the predicament they find themselves in.

Here are three Southampton men that shouldn't play for the club again – starting against Bournemouth on Saturday…

The Morocco international missed last Thursday's trip to Leicester City through illness, according to Mark Hughes, but it has since been reported in The Sun that may not be the case at all – especially considering he was nowhere to be seen against Chelsea on Sunday, or in the training ground video and photos this week.

If it is true that he refused to warm up when requested to by his manager during the 3-2 defeat against the Blues at St Mary's earlier this month, then it shows the poor attitude that Boufal has.

Considering he has only mustered four goals in 59 appearances in all competitions for the club following his move from Lille in 2016, they certainly won't lose too much sleep if he never plays for them again – which looks likely to be the case while Hughes is at the helm.

The Gabon international was another that missed the trip to Leicester with a back injury, and Southampton fans on Twitter were certainly suspicious of his absence given Mark Hughes' previous comments about the players he knew he could – and couldn't – rely on in their fight against relegation.

However, the 24-year-old did return to the starting XI against Chelsea on Sunday, but he hardly made the big impact that his manager may have expected him to, or that he clearly has the talent to do.

The former Juventus man looked lethargic and as though he was simply going through the motions during the 90 minutes, and the south coast outfit can't afford to have luxury players like that in the team now, or in the future.

The club-record signing of Carrillo during the January transfer window has proven to be one of the club's biggest mistakes of an awful season.

Former manager Mauricio Pellegrino obviously pushed the hierarchy into doing a deal for the Argentine striker, yet just over a month later he had been sacked following the dreadful 3-0 defeat against Newcastle.

The 26-year-old has no goals in 10 appearances for Saints to date, and the fact that he has failed to even make the squad for their last three Premier League fixtures show that he has no future at St Mary's – at least under Mark Hughes – and that his attitude perhaps isn't right.
