Southampton are absolutely right to want a defensive reshuffle this summer.

The Saints have the joint-second-worst defensive record in the division, and if they want to push on next season that simply has to change.

Fortunately, reports are indicating that they’re gearing up for a change with one of their defenders apparently set to leave the club this summer.

What’s the story?

The Saints are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Jannik Vestergaard.

You can understand why the Saints want rid of the former Borussia Monchengladbach defender, he’s only kept three clean sheets in 16 league appearances this term, and he’s fallen completely out of favour of late, starting just twice in the league since November.

The south coast club supposedly want £20m for the centre-back in order to recoup what they spent on him a couple of summers ago.

However, it’s hard to see the 6 ft 6 defender’s exit going that way.

No chance

While it would be nice for Southampton to receive such a fee for Vestergaard, surely this is just blind ambition from the St Mary’s outfit.

In what world do they think that Vestergaard’s value has stayed the same since he joined the club?

He’s been relegated to being a bit-part player after a dreadful start to the season that saw him play in arguably one of the most embarrassing defensive performances in Premier League history when Southampton were hammered 9-0 at home by Leicester City.

The fact of the matter is that his stock has fallen, his Transfermarkt valuation has been on a downward trajectory since he arrived on the south coast, and if the Saints want to sell him they may have to lower their expectations when it comes to the fee they’re going to receive for the centre-back. Their metrics currently value the big defender at just £13.5m, but even that sounds a tad generous.

To be honest, they should be happy with just getting him off the books for any sort of price. Vestergaard’s £60k a week wages are a real financial drain on the club, and they could do without paying that much for a man who has played just 202 minutes since the turn of the year.

In other news, Southampton will soon be spoiled for choice in one position.
