Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas admits he is a fan of Southampton youngster Luke Shaw but denied the club have made a bid for him.
The 17-year-old is the latest product of the Saints’ prolific youth academy, which can list Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gareth Bale as previous graduates.
Shaw has made 27 appearances in all competitions this campaign, helping the club secure survival in what was their first season back in the top flight since 2005.
The England Under-21 international’s displays at St Mary’s have attracted interest from a number of rival clubs, though Mauricio Pochettino’s men are in a stronger position to resist bids now their top flight status is secure.
Champions League chasing Spurs are regularly linked with a swoop for the talented starlet and boss Villas-Boas admits he is a fan.
However, he played down talk of an imminent bid for the player, who is set to be offered a new long-term contract at the south coast club.
“Any player who makes a breakthrough at the age that he has is absolutely unbelievable,” the Portuguese told reporters. “But it doesn’t mean there is direct interest from Tottenham in the player. But he’s a wonderful footballer, for sure.”
