If the rumours are correct, Chelsea could be on the verge of completing a world-record deal for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
A £200m offer is reportedly close to being accepted as the Argentine superstar continues his disagreements with Nou Camp boss Luis Enrique. Although some would argue it is the latter who is closest to leaving Camp Nou.
But can you imagine Lionel Messi playing alongside the likes of Diego Costa, Oscar, Cesc Fabregas (again!) and Eden Hazard. Chelsea really would be unstoppable, wouldn’t they?
The fact he’s closest to leaving Barcelona than ever before, what with a number of off field problems between him and the Catalan club’s hierarchy. The trouble is, if Barcelona were to cash in on what would be world’s most expensive player ever, they would be unable to replace him for two years while they serve a 24 month transfer embargo due to transfer irregularities involving Neymar’s move to the club a year ago.
They makes it even more unlikley that Messi will be leaving Barcelona anytime soon, although Chelsea are confident of getting a deal done in the summer. The Argentine’s £200m release-cause doesn’t appear to have bothered Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich, who still seems hell-bent on turning Chelsea in to the world’s most successful football team. What about Financial Fair Play regulations? Where do they start playing a part in a deal expected to be so big?
Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard both appeared in a FIFA15 advert over Christmas recently, which could be the first step towards a blossoming partnership on the pitch for the two stars…
