Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admitted that his side had deserved nothing from their trip to one of his former clubs, Birmingham City.
The Black Cats had only a Scott Dann own goal to show for their efforts, with the home side running out 2-1 winners at St Andrew's.
Bruce commented after the loss:"After the heights of last week, for the first hour at least, we were second best.
"In the last half an hour we have made a fist of it and got into the game and proved that we can cause a few problems, but we had waited too long.
"If we had shown the hunger and energy that we did in the last half an hour, the result might have been different.
"In my experience of the Premier League, if you have got seven or eight players having an off day you are in trouble, and we were.
"The big concern for me is we have to repeat the performances against Manchester United and Liverpool.
"To take this club forward, we have to have the mentality where we're not going to just show up for the big boys, but arrive at places like this and show the attitude to get a result."
