Sunderland are set to go head-to-head with West Ham in a transfer tug-of-war for Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
Right-back Jenkinson spent last season on loan with the Hammers, and new Irons manager Slaven Bilic is looking to extend his spell at the club to another year.
However, Sunderland are understood to have contacted Arsenal about the availability of the 23-year-old and are happy to pay a £2 million loan fee for the services.
Although there is reported interest from other Premier League clubs in Jenkinson, the Black Cats appear to be favourites to land the England international.
A loan deal is the most likely outcome for the player this summer, with the Gunners keen on retaining a young English-born player on their books.
The London club believe Jenkinson has a first-team future ahead of him at the Emirates Stadium and are happy to see him gain Premier League experience elsewhere in the meantime.
Jenkinson played in 32 league games for West Ham last season, and has impressed the club enough for them to want to bring him back for another campaign.
