Sunderland not giving up on Liverpool raid

Sunderland are still hopeful of tying up a deal for Liverpool‘s Fabio Borini, despite the player having rejected a move to the Stadium of Light, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Black Cats lodged a £14m offer recently for the man they had on loan last season, and it looked as if a deal to take him to the North East would go through.

However the Italy international opted against returning to Wearside in favour of staying at Anfield to battle for his future, even though Brendan Rodgers was seemingly willing to cut him loose.

And now with Loic Remy’s proposed switch to Liverpool giving collapsed it would appear that Borini will be given the chance he craves, but that has not deterred Sunderland.

Gus Poyet’s side have remained in contact with the Premier League runners-up over the course of the past few weeks, and are ready to swoop again so long as an agreement can be concluded before the new season starts.

The 23-year-old signed for Liverpool in 2012 but struggled to make an impact in an injury-hit first campaign.

He was loaned to Sunderland last term in a bid to get regular playing time and impressed under Poyet, firing vital goals as the club avoided relegation and made an appearance in the Capital One Cup Final – a game in which he scored.
