Whilst football fans across the country endure the impatient wait in-between an international tournament and the beginning of the new domestic season, players across the leagues have been dusting off the cobwebs by returning to pre-season training.

At Arsenal, the buzz of activity that took place at the beginning of the summer has since died down. The promise of a summer clearout has yet to come to fruition, and any hope that Robin van Persie would renew his contract with the Gunners has since diminished. What is promising however, are the signings of two new attacking players filled with potential in the forms of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

With plenty of business still to be done by clubs across Europe prior to the summer transfer window closing, Arsenal will no doubt be looking to bring in some more quality to end their 7 year trophy drought, as well as getting rid of underperformers who make up their ever increasing wage bill. These underperformers or over-earners can be found in positions all over the pitch, and some have played more of a role in their team’s fate than others in recent seasons.

As the Gunners’ clearout fails to take shape however, no doubt in part due to wage demands of certain individuals, our gallery looks at 8 surplus to requirement players Arsenal should still try to free from their ranks before the new season starts in a months time.
