In what is the last Premier League fixture before Christmas, Liverpool make the short trip across the city to face Everton at Goodison Park on Monday night.

Neither side is in fantastic form at the moment but both won their midweek fixtures to set up an tantalising derby.

Klopp's side are 11 points ahead of Koeman's and in the mix to challenge for the title heading into the New Year - but that could well depend on a win over the Toffees.

Everton, meanwhile, are pushing for Europe and will be hoping a massive victory over Arsenal is enough to kickstart what has been a faltering campaign so far. A win over their city rivals would be a massive step forward - and boost morale amongst Koeman's squad.

It's all set to be a very tasty night under the Goodison lights. Here are the FIVE battles that we think will decide the scoreline.

Sadio Mane has been an exceptional signing for Liverpool since joining in the summer. Destroying most defences with his agile and skillful dribbling, he's contributed seven goals and four assists this season already.

In Leighton Baines he'll find a tough opponent who never gives up a fight. The full-back was in sensational form against Arsenal during his last outing, keeping Walcott quiet all night and offering an attacking threat of his own.

This has the potential to be the game's defining battle and one that is likely to produce fireworks.

Gareth Barry vs. Georginio Wijnaldum

Gareth Barry

Gareth Barry missed the midweek match against Arsenal but looked in good form against Watford, despite the away defeat.

His passing and ability to counter opposition midfielders with decent tackling and strong blocking should stand him well against the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum.

Despite Liverpool's excellent season so far, Wijnaldum hasn't contributed as much as fans would like and Monday night gives him a big opportunity to shine in a massive game.

It's an intriguing midfield battle and whichever of these players can assert themselves on the game should play a major role in their side's performance.

Romelu Lukaku vs. Dejan Lovren

Romelu Lukaku has scored nine goals for Everton this season and will be hoping to break into double figures for the fourth season in a row.

After a five-game streak without a goal, Lukaku bounced back last week against Watford and his two goals should have propelled his side towards victory in a 3-2 defeat.

He followed that up with a good performance against Arsenal and showed his worth despite not getting on the scoresheet.

The man tasked with containing the big striker is Dejan Lovren. The Croatian centre-back has endured an inconsistent time of late, looking so assured away to Middlesbrough but decidedly ropy against Bournemouth and West Ham.

If the defender can keep Lukaku quiet, Everton probably won't have the most joyous of evenings.

 Jordan Henderson vs. Idrissa Gueye

Idrissa Gueye

Even through patches of bad form, Idrissa Gueye has been a bright spot for Everton. The defensive midfielder has been drawing comparisons with N'Golo Kante with his strong tackling, tireless energy and ability to bring the ball forward with strength and pace when he does turnover possession.

He's got the legs to go toe-to-toe with Jordan Henderson, who is having one of his best seasons in a Liverpool shirt. The England international has provided five assists this season but is also a key figure in Klopp's system when the Reds don't have the ball.

This is the battle to watch in the heart of midfield.

Divock Origi vs. Ramiro Funes Mori

Divock Origi scored just one goal in his first 11 games this season but has found a rich vein of form since. The Belgian international has scored a goal in each of his last five games and looked particularly impressive away to Middlesbrough, also chipping in with an assist.

Liverpool haven't been lacking for goals but having a recognised striker finding the net regularly could be the edge they need to improve even more in the league.

Everton fans will be hoping Funes Mori is up to the task, given that he hasn't exactly thrilled the Goodison Park faithful this season. The Argentinian international has been struggling for form and that can often end badly going up against a striker who is scoring for fun right now...
