It would be wrong to talk about a permanent shift of power in European football following the events in the Champions League this season. Equally, it would be wrong to assume the stars of Spanish football are central to Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Both Tottenham and Liverpool will continue to rebuild, while both clubs will be encouraged by the competitive nature of La Liga this season. Like the Premier League, the title race in Spain is over. Yet unlike England, Spain currently has four teams challenging for the final Champions League spot for next season. It’s a level of competition that has brought about the best in the four clubs at various stages of the season along with a couple of surprises.
However, it doesn’t need to be said that Spain struggle to hold onto its talented players, with most either moving up in the league or away completely. This summer, Spurs and Liverpool could benefit from a great selection of talent if they know where to look.
