Tottenham fans are begging for Toby Alderweireld to sign a contract extension

The future of Toby Alderweireld has been hanging in the balance for quite some time at Tottenham and the release clause within his current deal appears to be giving supporters plenty of cause for concern.

Following months of speculation linking him with a move away from the club, Spurs extended Alderweireld’s deal in December 2018.

The Belgium international was due to become a free agent this summer, but the new contract extended his stay until June 2020, albeit with a notable twist.

Alderweireld can now be signed for a fee of just £25 million before the final two weeks of the summer window, and that is forcing supporters to call for him to sign a new deal.

Tottenham’s official Twitter page posted a compilation featuring a handful of stunning long-range passes from the 29-year-old – a post which prompted plenty of supporters to call for the same thing.

Indeed, the Spurs fans have turned out in their numbers on Twitter to call for him to put pen to paper on a fresh contract in the coming months, with fears over a summer departure beginning to increase.

The terms of the most recent extension produced a bizarre set of conflicting emotions, but it’s fair to say the signing of a new contract with no release clause would be met with resounding enthusiasm amongst the Lilywhites faithful.

Here’s what a selection of Tottenham supporters have had to say about Alderweireld’s future:
