Tottenham or Liverpool – did he make the right choice?

Much was made of Gylfi Sigurdsson’s decision to join Tottenham over Liverpool. Both clubs showed stern interest after the Icelandic midfielder performed admirably for Swansea while on loan from Hoffenheim back in 2012. Sigurdsson scored 7 goals in 18 appearances for the Swans, leading them to an impressive 9th place finish. Sigurdsson opted for north London despite interest from Liverpool as well as across the league, and many have raised the question of whether or not he chose wisely.

The current league positions of the clubs suggests Sigurdsson make the wrong choice. Tottenham sit 6th, seven points away from the Champions League places, while Liverpool are flying high in 2nd and firmly amongst those fighting for the title. 12 points separate the two sides, and from the outside looking in it seems Liverpool are the better suitors. The Reds also smashed the Spurs last time they met earlier in the season, thumping them 5-0.

Sigurdsson is a central midfielder, and finds himself relatively high in the Spurs pecking order. With Christian Eriksen the only midfielder guaranteed his spot in the centre of the park, Sigurdsson has seen a reasonable amount of football. With Liverpool possessing Gerrard and Coutinho, as well as Jordan Henderson and Lucas Leiva, perhaps his chances would be much less frequent at Anfield.

The player himself has said he has no regrets over the move, which will come as welcome news for Spurs fans, and he’ll be looking to make it two in two against the Reds.
