According to reports in The Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in landing Manchester United centre-back Eric Bailly during the January transfer window.
Well, The Daily Star says that Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of the Ivory Coast international, although he could face competition from arch-rivals Arsenal for his signature.
The Daily Star says that the 24-year-old has become disillusioned with life under Jose Mourinho, who personally criticised him following the Carabao Cup defeat to Derby County, and in his first Premier League start since August against Newcastle United last weekend he was taken off before half-time.
The report adds however that it isn’t clear whether the Red Devils would be willing to sell a player that cost £30m from Villarreal in 2016.
While he has Premier League experience under his belt and has shown his quality previously, the fact that he isn’t considered good enough to start ahead of the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling right now should be a worry for Pochettino and Spurs.
The 24-year-old clearly has ability, but the fact that he has really struggled to kick on following a positive start at Old Trafford is concerning, while his injury problems suggest that he could be a risky buy for Spurs.
If the north London outfit do eventually need a replacement for Toby Alderweireld – and indeed Jan Vertonghen – to partner Davinson Sanchez in the future, they would be better off buying an older player who is more of a leader than Bailly is.
