According to reports in The Sun, Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Mathew Ryan is a surprise target for Manchester United as they search for a replacement for David De Gea, and their Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur should look to hijack any move.
Well, The Sun report that the Red Devils’ hierarchy are secretly looking for a successor for their Spanish stopper after he decided not to sign the new deal that he has been offered by the club.
The Sun says that highly-rated Australia international is a shock name near the top of their list, and they believe the 6ft 2in goalkeeper is ready to make the step up to a top-six club following his £5m move from Valencia to the south coast outfit in 2017.
The report adds that while Ryan has three-and-a-half years left on his current contract and manager Chris Hughton doesn’t want to lose him, they will find it difficult to stand in his way if United come calling.
Spurs may have Hugo Lloris between the sticks right now, but the Frenchman’s form this season is certainly concerning.
The 2018 World Cup-winning captain has made two high-profile mistakes in the Champions League, while of course he was also convicted for drink-driving earlier in the year.
With Michel Vorm seemingly set to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season and with Paulo Gazzaniga the only other senior option, it is clear that Pochettino needs to bring a new stopper to the club either in January or next summer.
Should he move for Ryan the Australian wouldn’t simply be playing second-fiddle to Lloris, he would be putting some real pressure on the Pochettino favourite whose number one spot is far less secure than it has been previously right now.
