It’s that time of year again when your club is linked with a host of players you’ve never heard of.
But instead of frantically searching YouTube for highlight reels of the rising star coming out of Bolivia and linked to Stoke City, maybe a glance at the key stats is the best course of action.
And reported Tottenham Hotspur target Vincent Janssen has some serious stats.
It’s the old chestnut, isn’t it? If you score goals in a weaker league, can you score it in a stronger one? Luis Suarez scored goals in the Eredivisie, but then so did Afonso Alves.
But Janssen seems to have that little bit extra to his game, judging by the stats. It’s not his goals to games ratio, which is impressive no matter what the league is, but also the fact that he creates chances for his team mates, too.
At Spurs next season, you’d expect Harry Kane to be the main striker and bagger of goals in chief. But one thing Pochettino will want is someone who can deputise and step up when needed. Last season, Kane suffered a seven game goal drought at the start of the season, and whilst he proved he wasn’t a one season wonder, the rather slow start to the season – featuring too many draws – saw Spurs crying out for someone to take on the mantle of goalscorer in the absence of their main man.
Perhaps Janssen is just that man for next season, but it’s likely that he’ll be either a second choice or a second fiddle, harmonising the melody of Harry Kane.
Either way, he looks like a player!
