Tottenham Hotspur central defender Toby Alderweireld has confirmed that he would like to return to Ajax, per Voetbal International.
The Belgium international has a £25million release clause in his contract and speculation persists over his future.
He played a key role in Spurs’ victory over the Dutch club in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final and will surely play a part in the club’s clash with Liverpool in Madrid.
But he has now confirmed that he is considering the prospect of a fairytale return to the Dutch club, though it remains to be seen if such a move could happen this summer.
He said: “I don’t want to make too popular statements, but it is certainly 100 per cent in my head.
“I have had wonderful times here with three championships, but also lows. But my family was happy here too.”
This would be a shock.
Ajax don’t tend to spend big money on players and their current transfer record stands at just over £14m.
But a move for Alderweireld this summer would be palatable to all parties.
Spurs, obviously, lose one of their best players but he’s 30 and he doesn’t move to a Premier League rival, while Ajax sign one of the finest central defenders on the continent.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy does not have a say in the Belgian’s future, as a bid of £25m would force the club to negotiate.
But if he can convince the ace to make a dramatic return ato Ajax, fans are unlikely to grumble too much.
