Toby Alderweireld made his return from injury last week, much to the delight of Tottenham Hotspur fans, but it appears that the defender will not be called upon for Tuesday’s last-16 tie against Juventus in the Champions League.
According to The Telegraph, the Belgian will not travel with the squad to Turin, and will instead work on his fitness.
Alderweireld was on the treatment table for just over three months after suffering a hamstring injury during Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Real Madrid in the group stage of the Champions League.
The defender made his return in last Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Newport in there FA Cup.
The 28-year-old played the full 90 minutes at Wembley, but was not named in the squad that earned a 1-0 triumph over North London rivals Arsenal at the weekend.
Amid reports that Alderweireld will not be used in one of Spurs’ most important games of the season has got fans talking on Twitter.
Some are concerned that this news could be related to his future at the club.
We can all try and convince ourselves that this is fine but if he hasn’t felt his injury after the Newport game then he should have been on the bench yesterday and going out to Italy. I think there is more to this that could be contract related which doesn’t sound good.

He’s not fully match fit as yet. He’s been out for 3 months…he only played against Newport which was a walk in the park…we pulled off results against United, Liverpool and Arsenal w/o him. We good!

Well, its disappointing,.. But we proved enough times we can do it without him! #COYS

What a defender who has played once since the 1st of November?

Poch has plenty of form for making stars wait post-injury before throwing them back in the 1st team squad, but Toby not travelling to Italy is odd given Foyth’s exclusion from the revised UCL squad. #COYS

Toby will understand why he is left out after such a long injury and the teams present form, if he doesn't or it has something to do with contract etc then I don't care if you are Messi you can jog on out of the club! I'm hopeful for the former #COYS #THFC

@BBCSport Toby Alderweireld is going nowhere. He has been out for 3 months and now he is getting back up to fitness. The only game he's played since being back is a replay against Newport. #COYS #THFC #Tottenham #Newport #TOTNEW #TobyAlderweireld #TransferNews

Toby is very happy at Tottenham. Don’t listen to the rubbish others come up with.
Not in Juve Squad due to his long injury lay off, and spurs not wanting to risk further injury.
When the time comes he will sign the new contract, this is not another Walker situation. #COYS
