LaLiga champions Barcelona are eyeing a shock swoop for Tottenham midfielder Eric Dier, according to TeamTalk.
Mauricio Pochettino’s fine performances in charge of Tottenham have attracted plenty of interest in recent years and another member of his squad has emerged as a target for a European giant, as they prepare a raid next year.
According to TeamTalk, Spanish champions Barcelona were impressed by Eric Dier’s performance for England in the recent 3-2 victory over Spain in the UEFA Nations League and are considering a move for the former Sporting Lisbon man.
The report stats Barcelona scouts have been told to keep a close eye on the 24-year-old as they eye a move for the versatile ace, who they believe can provide cover in defensive midfield and at the heart of their back-line.
Tottenham would be able to command a hefty fee for a sale of Dier and the 24-year-old is a player that could certainly be deemed as more expendable than the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min but an exit in 2019 would be disastrous.
The Lilywhites are already braced for the exit of Mousa Dembele at the end of his contract next year and losing Dier in the same window would leave Spurs in desperate need of midfield additions to fill the role in front of the back four.
Dembele’s exit will already leave Spurs in the hunt for midfield additions and the risk of losing Dier is significant as Pochettino would have to spend heavily to fill the void he would leave in the squad, which the club may not be able to afford with the financial implications of their stadium move.
