Big price-tag not a problem says Tottenham newbie

Erik LamelaTottenham winger Erik Lamela believes that the large fee the club paid for him over the summer is not a hindrance, and is actually inspiring him to perform.

The Argentine ace switched to North London from Roma during the last window in a £30m deal, making him Spurs’ most expensive player.

He has since struggled to force his way into Andre Villas-Boas’ team, with fitness concerns and adapting to life in England hindering his progress.

But, the 21-year-old showed a glimpse of why Tottenham paid heavily for his services with a strike in their midweek Europa League win over FC Shefiff – a victory that booked the side’s spot in the next round of the competition.

His slow start to life with the Lilywhites has been put down by some to his price-tag, but Lamela says that the large fee is not a problem:

“The transfer fee is no pressure for me because when I went to Roma in 2011 they paid quite a lot (£11.7m) to bring me from River Plate.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.

“The size of the transfer fee is a good thing for me. It means that Tottenham were prepared to go the extra mile to get me, so I want to show them what I can do, always for the benefit of the team.

“I came here to give the team what they need. I will bring what I can and I hope to do well.

“When I said recently that I would be capable of making the difference here, I said it because I believe in myself.”

Will Erik Lamela fulfil his potential with Tottenham?
