As reported by The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt this summer, should they end up selling Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United during the upcoming transfer window, potentially leaving a massive hole in the Spurs defensive line that Mauricio Pochettino would have to address.
One player that could be an excellent long-term choice in the centre-back position is Ajax prospect Matthijs de Ligt.
The Daily Mail report that if Spurs receive a significant fee for Alderweireld, they’re ready to splash out on a £50m move for the young defender, who is regarded as one of the most exciting teenage talents on the continent.
Although he made his debut for Ajax last season and featured prominently in their run to the UEFA Europa League final, this term is the teenager’s first full season as a regular in the Dutch side’s starting eleven.
Helping his side in their, ultimately ill-fated, challenge for the Eredivisie title, he’s contributed to 12 clean sheets this season and shown impressive consistent form for a player so young.
He’s developing well for the Netherlands too, with five caps to his name including two starts in the most recent international break against England and Portugal, contributing two assists vs the latter.
All signs point to him being a player with enormous potential and if Tottenham can invest in his future early it could pay off massively for years to come. It’s a potential that could quickly leave fan-favourite Alderweireld nothing but a memory to supporters.
