Kieran Trippier has admitted he endured a poor run of form at Tottenham Hotspur last season, per BBC Sport.

What’s the word?

The right-back sealed a £20m move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.

Trippier’s move came about after a difficult season that was categorised by individual mistakes, namely a comical own goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

And he has now admitted that he was distracted by speculation over his future.

He said: "I'm happy it's gone. I'm happy to talk about it if people want to - but I'm delighted it's over.

"There's no excuse for what happened last season.

"Some things happened - nothing bad, it was just injuries and hearing things like I won't be there next season in the media.

"It was in the back of my mind: 'Did they want me?'

"It was important to know - that's why I sat down with the manager (Mauricio Pochettino) in pre-season and asked the question."

Finally honest

Trippier previously claimed that he left Spurs because of “behind-the-scenes” developments.

Now he has fronted up.

Throughout last season, the England international was so bad he was actually left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Nations League finals.

It is refreshing to see that he has admitted he has no excuse for his appalling performances but perhaps he should not have tried to mask that previously.

Spurs fans will likely forgive him, though, particularly as they don’t have to watch him in 2019/20.
