There were a few raised eyebrows when Tottenham Hotspur announced the £8million signing of Steaua Bucharest’s Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches.
The 23-year-old caught the attention of European football when he scored against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in last season’s Champions League, as well as his regular solid performances in the Romanian Premier League.
But, as a relatively unknown quantity, not many people could understand why Andre Villas-Boas had decided to replace the Cardiff bound Steven Caulker with the Romanian, particularly when you consider Spurs already had the likes of Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonhen already at the club.
Yes, Kaboul has suffered with injuries in recent seasons but, to disrupt what looked like a solid defensive unit by removing a hot-prospect in Caulker and replacing with an unknown in Chiriches, you wonder what Villas-Boas has seen that we all haven’t. But the Romanian could well be one of the signings of the summer transfer window.
