Tottenham are reportedly chasing a mega money deal to land Christian Pulisic, but the man they should really be eyeing up is PSV’s Steven Bergwijn.

What's the word?

According to German outlet Kicker, Tottenham have made a €50m (£44m) bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Pulisic.

Mauricio Pochettino is targeting another winger this summer to provide more support for his front men, and a young player like Pulisic or the previously linked Malcolm seems the perfect fit to share time with the current crop of attackers.

While Pulisic has showed glimpses of brilliance since moving to Dortmund aged just 16, PSV’s Bergwijn is more athletic, more versatile and has better end product.

If Pochettino wants another attacker to take some of the pressure off the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, then the 20 year-old Dutchman would be the absolute perfect signing.

What's all the fuss about?

Bergwijn is the latest in a long line of PSV youth academy graduates to star in the first team, grabbing eight goals and 11 assists in 32 Eredivisie appearances last season. To put that in perspective, Pulisic has seven goals and 14 assists in his last two Bundesliga seasons combined.

Valued at just £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the PSV wonderkid would be a great fit for a Pochettino side as he has excelled when pressing high for Mark van Bommel’s PSV last season. He played mostly from the left wing, but started 11 games from the right and even a few as a centre forward.

Blessed with fantastic speed, he is often compared to a young Memphis Depay, perhaps due to his tendency to cut inside and test the keeper from long distance.

He has fantastic close control, which combined with his athleticism enables him to dominate defenders one on one, but what separates him for other wingers is his final ball.

Top wingers have to be able to do a little bit of everything. Beating your defender and blindly lashing a ball into the box simply isn’t enough, just ask Adama Traore. Bergwijn is calm and composed when he gets in and around the box, and nearly always makes the right decision whether to pass or shoot, a rare trait for a 20 year-old winger.

Tottenham have experience plucking gems from the Eredivisie, evidenced by the tremendous success of last summer’s move for Davinson Sanchez, and they should waste no time shopping there again.

Erik Lamela could leave the club this summer, so replacing him with a younger, faster, more versatile player like Bergwijn is a no brainer. He is superior to Pulisic in practically ever facet of the game.
