Spurs’ Champions League hopes took a big blow last night. The Lilywhites slipped to a 0-1 loss at ‘home’ to Bayer Leverkusen, keeping up the Wembley curse when it comes to English club sides – the last five UCL games including Premier League teams have ended in wins for their foreign adversaries.
Granted, Mauricio Pochettino’s men can get themselves into the last 16 with positive results against Monaco and CSKA Moscow in their remaining two matches, but there’s a possibility it could be all over by the time their next game at Wembley takes place, with a loss at the Stade Louis II and a Leverkusen win in Russia enough to leave them staring at Europa League football.
So, what went wrong for Spurs last night? There were a few problems, but the amazing performance of 19-year-old Bayer defender Benjamin Henrichs didn’t help them either…
The teenager, playing at right-back, was in excellent defensive form, completing 100% of his eight tackles while making five clearances and four interceptions. Not a bad shift, that.
Benjamin Henrichs made 8 tackles against Spurs, winning every single one of them.
